Assam School Academic Year May Shift to Jan–Dec.

Assam’s school education system is likely to undergo a major change, as the state government is considering a shift back to the January–December academic year. This would replace the current April–March schedule, which was introduced in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. The proposed move is expected to offer a calendar that better suits Assam’s cultural patterns, seasonal challenges, and student needs.

Why Is the Change Being Considered?

The April–March academic session, though helpful during the pandemic, has caused several difficulties. In Assam, schools often reopen during Rongali Bihu, a major festival, while floods and extreme heat further disrupt the start of the school year. These delays reduce teaching time and make it harder for students and teachers to complete the syllabus before exams.

In contrast, the January–December format, followed earlier in Assam, better matches the state’s natural calendar. It takes into account farming cycles, weather patterns, and major festivals, making it easier for schools to operate without frequent interruptions.

Government Review and Committee Involvement

To evaluate the potential shift, the state government has appointed a three-member expert committee. The panel includes:

  • Krishna Baruah, Additional Secretary, Education Department
  • Mamata Hojai, Director of Secondary Education
  • Suranjana Senapati, Director of Elementary Education

Their task is to consult with various stakeholders such as education experts, student bodies like AASU, and teacher organizations including the Assam State Primary Teachers’ Association.

This consultation process will help build a well-balanced academic plan that considers learning goals, exam timelines, and the local environment.

Public and Institutional Support

There is strong support for the change among stakeholders. The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has long recommended returning to the January-based session, stating that it would give students more consistent study time and reduce stress caused by mid-year disruptions.

Similarly, teachers’ associations support the move, saying that aligning the calendar with Assam’s cultural and weather patterns will ensure more effective teaching days.

It’s also worth noting that when Assam followed the January–December calendar previously, board exams (Class 10 and 12) were still conducted in February–March — maintaining alignment with CBSE schedules

Benefits of Returning to the Old Calendar

Here’s how the proposed shift could help Assam’s education system:

  • Fewer disruptions due to floods and festivals
  • Better time management for both students and teachers
  • More focused academic sessions
  • Flexibility to hold board exams as per national timelines
  • Enhanced learning experience across government and private schools

The final decision will come after the committee completes its discussions with all stakeholders. If approved:

  • Schools will shift to a January-start academic year
  • A new schedule will be announced
  • Teachers and students will receive transitional support

Moving back to a January–December academic session could bring long-term stability to Assam’s schools. With better coordination between seasonal events and academic plans, this change has the potential to enhance learning, reduce stress, and ensure more effective classroom time for students and educators alike.
